Are You Protecting a Relationship That Isn’t Real?

Sometimes, we hide parts of ourselves in an attempt to “protect” a relationship. Ironically, this can create a dynamic where we’re safeguarding something that isn’t even true to who we are, a relationship built on only part of our truth. When we hold back our authentic selves, we may feel temporarily safe, but this safety is superficial, and in the long run, it keeps us disconnected from real fulfillment.

Authenticity as a Path to True Connection

Real relationships, whether personal or professional, require honesty and self-expression. If we aren’t fully showing up, we may avoid discomfort, but we’re also avoiding deep, meaningful connections. Full, honest connection requires a willingness to risk discomfort by revealing our whole selves. When we step into truth, we create space for relationships that reflect who we truly are.

Case Study: Hiding in a Marriage

One of my coaching clients, Lisa, spent years adapting to her spouse’s expectations. She hid parts of her personality, her love for adventure, her passion for art, because she feared it would create distance. Over time, she began to feel resentful and disconnected, as though she had lost herself within the relationship. When Lisa finally opened up about her desires, something incredible happened: her partner actually felt relief. He had sensed the disconnection but didn’t know why. Instead of pushing him away, her honesty deepened their bond and brought them closer together.

Case Study: Professional Hiding

Another client, James, was thriving in his corporate career but secretly dreamed of starting his own business. He avoided sharing this ambition with his colleagues and mentors, fearing judgment. The more he hid his aspirations, the more isolated he felt. When he finally confided in a trusted mentor, he was shocked to find encouragement and unexpected support. That conversation led him to connections and opportunities that made his transition into entrepreneurship smoother than he’d imagined.

Reflection:

Where in your life are you holding back your truth? What relationships or opportunities might be more real and fulfilling if you allowed yourself to be fully seen?

Try This:

  1. Identify One Area of Hiding: Whether personal or professional, pinpoint where you may be withholding parts of yourself.
  2. Have One Honest Conversation: Choose someone you trust and share something real, an unspoken desire, a hidden dream, or a part of yourself you’ve been holding back.
  3. Notice What Shifts: Pay attention to how honesty changes your interactions and how freeing it feels to be fully seen.

Closing Thought:

Building real relationships, personally and professionally, requires courage. But in doing so, we protect what’s real and worth cherishing.
