Do people keep their word with you?

Have you ever found yourself frustrated because someone said one thing… and did another? It happens. Whether it’s a missed deadline, a flaked meeting, or a promise left hanging, broken words sting. But here’s what I’ve learned: instead of cutting people out or walking around resentful, there’s a much more powerful way to relate to this. One that strengthens relationships, builds trust, and elevates performance.

1 – Recognize the Pattern

Most people don’t have a strong muscle when it comes to keeping their word. It’s not always malicious; it’s often untrained. Integrity isn’t automatic. Like any muscle, it needs attention, awareness, and exercise.

2 – Acknowledge Your Reaction

It’s easy to feel annoyed, disappointed, or let down. I’ve been there. But instead of reacting, I step back and ask: what’s really happening here? Often, it’s not personal. It’s a gap in awareness or structure, not a character flaw.

3 – Embrace Development Over Judgment

I’ve adopted an unmessablewith mindset. That means I use these moments not to cut someone off, but to help them strengthen their integrity muscle. Just like someone learning a new skill, people need space and support to build consistency.

4 – Have the Conversation

Avoidance doesn’t solve anything. I open up a conversation with compassion and clarity. I ask questions like: “What do we need to put in place so when we say something, it actually happens?” Sometimes it’s as simple as a reminder, an accountability check-in, or just realigning on the commitment.

5 – Model It Yourself

This part matters. If I’m asking others to live from their word, I have to do the same. I keep my promises. And when I don’t, I restore my word with integrity. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being powerful and responsible.

6 – Address It in Business Too

In professional settings, word = performance. When someone I manage drops the ball more than once, I don’t ignore it. I intervene quickly to see what they need: tools, support, structure, so they can have their word, not just explain why they broke it.

7 – Choose Empowerment Over Frustration

This isn’t about right or wrong. It’s about creating a context where everyone wins. When someone breaks their word, including me, I ask, “How do we strengthen the system so this doesn’t happen again?” That’s the foundation of being unmessablewith. That’s where the real power lives.

When we live inside of say X, do X, we step into a level of fulfillment, clarity, performance, and peace of mind that transforms how we work, relate, and lead.
