Leadership: Through Words and Actions
In leadership, it’s not enough to simply follow advice or repeat what someone else told you. True leadership comes from being at the source of what you say and do, where your words, actions, and decisions are fully owned and aligned with your vision. When you’re at the source, you’re not just playing the role of a leader. You are the leader.
The Power of Being at the Source
Being at the source means that everything you say and do comes from a deep understanding and ownership. You’re not just mimicking strategies or saying what you think others want to hear. Instead, you’re creating your own path, standing confidently in your vision. This is the distinction between acting and being.
Think of a great actor. When they first learn their lines, they’re merely repeating what someone else wrote. But over time, through rehearsals and practice, they embody those lines as if they wrote them. At that moment, they stop acting and become the character. Similarly, when you embody your vision and your decisions, you are no longer just “acting” as a leader, you are fully in your role.
Why It Matters to Own Your Words and Actions
- Clarity in Decision-Making: When you’re at the source, you have clarity. You know why you’re making certain decisions and can communicate them with confidence, which builds trust with your team and those around you.
- Authentic Communication: Whether you’re handling difficult conversations or leading a major initiative, being at the source allows you to communicate from a place of authenticity. You’re not just explaining things, you are leading from a space that feels genuine and aligned with your values.
- Confidence in Conversations: In moments of challenge or resistance, it’s easy to get defensive or feel the need to explain yourself. But when you’re the source of what you’re saying, there’s no need for justification, you’re standing firmly in your leadership. It’s like being the author of your script. You own the conversation, and that ownership allows for more effective and powerful communication.
Shifting from Reaction to Creation
A common pitfall in leadership is getting stuck in reaction mode, defending decisions or explaining actions. This happens when you’re not fully at the source of what you’re saying. But when you’re operating from a place of creation, focused on your vision rather than reacting to circumstances, your leadership becomes powerful and unshakable.
For instance, in a difficult conversation, instead of reacting defensively to feedback, a leader at the source will step back and focus on the bigger picture. What’s the vision? What are the actions needed to move forward? This shift from reaction to creation is the hallmark of a true leader.
How to Be at the Source of Your Leadership
- Understand Your Vision: Take the time to get clear on what you’re committed to creating in your leadership, your team, and your organization. When you know where you’re going, your actions and words naturally align with that vision.
- Own Your Words: Before you speak or take action, ask yourself: Am I repeating what someone else has told me, or am I speaking from a place of deep understanding? If you haven’t yet fully grasped the concept or the strategy, take the time to get clear so that when you communicate, it’s coming from you, not from someone else.
- Embody the Role: Just like an actor who becomes their character, embody your leadership fully. Whether you’re leading a meeting, giving a presentation, or making a critical decision, do it from a place of ownership and confidence. When you embody your leadership, others naturally follow.
- Take Responsibility: Being at the source means taking responsibility for both your successes and your failures. Own the outcomes, learn from them, and adjust your actions moving forward.
Leadership in Action: Being Unmessablewith
When you’re at the source of what you say and do, you become what I call unmessablewith. It doesn’t mean you won’t face challenges or opposition, it means that no matter what comes your way, you stand firmly in your leadership. You’re not easily shaken or thrown off course because you’re operating from a deep place of ownership.
This kind of leadership is transformative. It empowers you to handle difficult situations with grace and clarity, inspires confidence in those around you, and allows you to create real, lasting impact.
