The Power Of Parallel Pathways

Many times when I work with clients, whether in group coaching, one-on-one sessions, or my Mastery program for entrepreneurs who want to more than double their business, we often uncover a common constraint: they’re focused on a single pathway to achieve their dream or goal.

Now, while focus is incredibly powerful and useful, it can also be an Achilles’ heel. When you become hyper-focused, you can become myopic, unable to see the parallel or multiple pathways available to achieve your goals.

When I coach my clients, I encourage them to brainstorm and explore multiple pathways. For example, let’s say you’re an actor with a goal of booking a Broadway show. That’s a great goal, but there are many roads to get there.

  • You could network with casting directors who specialize in Broadway shows and build relationships with them.
  • You could become a reader for a casting director, allowing them to get to know you better than they would from just one audition or workshop.
  • You could start networking with other Broadway performers and ask for introductions to their agents, musical directors, or artistic directors at the theaters where they work.
  • You could even take a job as an usher at a Broadway theater, using that position to network with industry professionals until you find an opportunity to audition.
  • You could study with a world-class Broadway acting or voice coach, take dance classes, or practice vocal exercises daily.

Each of these actions is a pathway toward the goal of being on Broadway. The problem arises when people get so focused on one pathway that they neglect the others. It’s like going to the gym and only doing chest exercises, eventually, you’ll end up with an overdeveloped chest and underdeveloped legs, arms, and abs.

The key is to create multiple parallel pathways toward your dream, whether that’s doubling your income, landing a particular job, publishing your book, or any other goal. I recommend brainstorming at least five pathways that you can take action on daily to move closer to your goal.

Remember, every action you take in the direction of your dream adds momentum to the other pathways you’re pursuing. So, take a moment right now to think about your dream or goal. What are five different pathways you could begin to act on today that would move you closer to that goal?
