The Power of Reality-Based Planning aka Avoidance is Expensive

How many times have you found yourself overwhelmed, frozen in indecision, or blindsided by something you “didn’t see coming”? Maybe it was a financial dip, a health scare, a career roadblock, or just a general sense of what is even happening right now?!

It’s rarely the actual circumstance that knocks us off course. It’s our lack of relationship to what’s really happening.

Avoidance is Expensive

You might be telling yourself, “I’ll deal with that later,” or “It’s not that bad,” while actively avoiding your numbers, calendar, inbox, doctor, or conversations you know you need to have.

Avoidance doesn’t just delay discomfort-it amplifies it. Every time you sidestep reality, you give your power away.

But here’s the flip side: When you’re fully related to reality, you are powerful. You can pivot. You can create. You can act.

What Is Reality-Based Planning?

Reality-based planning is the art of telling yourself the truth, and then using that truth to drive meaningful action.

It’s not about being “negative” or “realistic” in the defeatist sense. It’s about being grounded. Clear. Activated.

Here’s what it takes:

1️⃣ Clarity

Get brutally honest about what’s actually going on. Not the Instagram version. Not the hopeful “maybe things will magically get better” version. The actual version.

2️⃣ Measurement

Track what matters. Numbers don’t lie. Whether it’s your finances, your schedule, your blood pressure, or your sales calls, measure what you want to master.

3️⃣ Action

Once you see clearly, move. Make a decision. Send the email. Have the conversation. Set the boundary. Sign up for the class. Clarity without action is just awareness.

Are You Playing the Avoidance Game?

Avoidance is sneaky. It wears many disguises:

  • Procrastinating on uncomfortable conversations
  • Ignoring your bank balance
  • Avoiding your calendar or commitments
  • Telling yourself “everything is fine” when it’s clearly not

If you’re doing that, no shame. Just notice. And then shift.

When You’re Related to Reality, You:

  • Make informed, strategic decisions
  • Feel empowered even in uncertainty
  • Anticipate problems before they escalate
  • Build sustainable momentum (not just bursts of hustle)

When you’re not related to reality, you:

  • Waste energy spinning your wheels
  • Stay in reaction mode
  • Miss key opportunities
  • Feel anxious without knowing why

Your Next Step: A Simple Reality Check

Here’s what I invite you to do today:

👉 Ask yourself: What’s one area of my life where I’m not fully related to reality? Maybe it’s your finances. Maybe your time. Maybe a relationship.

What data am I avoiding? This could be numbers, feedback, receipts, patterns, missed appointments, whatever you’ve been conveniently ignoring.

What is one action I can take today to get clear? Not next week. Today. One email, one call, one calendar audit, one honest conversation.

Final Thought:

Power doesn’t start with motivation. It starts with reality.

Let’s stop spinning stories and start grounding in what’s real. Not because it’s comfortable, but because it’s liberating.

You can’t create the life you want if you’re not related to the life you actually have.

Let’s get to work,
